ExpandType Maintenance

Top  Previous  Next

ExpandType is the name of ChartNet's proprietary speed-typing feature.  ExpandType allows you to create short abbreviations for frequently used words, phrases, sentences, or even whole paragraphs that will be automatically inserted into the report after you enter the abbreviation followed by a space character.  For example, you might have an abbreviation of "abd" that expands to "abdomen".  This topic explains how to add and edit ExpandType abbreviations.

Note- Each user has their own ExpandType file which cannot be accessed by any other user.  In addition, each user is allowed to have more than one ExpandType file if desired.

Add New Abbreviation

1.Click on New (or press Alt+N).  The ExpandType Main tabsheet will appear (Figure 18-2).

2.Enter an abbreviation, up to 20 characters long.  Important- make sure you enter your abbreviation in lowercase letters.  Press TAB to move to the text window where you will enter the text to be inserted into your report.

3.Enter the replacement text in the text window.  The text window is much like the typing window that is used to enter reports.  You are free to use all of the formatting tools available to you.  For example, if the text is to always be centered, press CTRL-E to center the text.  Tip- don't worry about what font style is used when you enter your expanded text.  ChartNet will always change the font to match the font currently in use in the report when it brings in your text.

4.  If you've selected a font style (i.e., Arial Black) or font size other than the default check the 'Keep fonts and font sizes when inserting:' checkbox to apply those selections when replacing the abbreviation with the text in the text window.

5.  Users may NOT use dashes ("-") or slashes ("/") as these are reserved characters.  If these characters exist in your expanded word, ExpandType will be unable to recognize the corrected word.
