Using ExpandType

Top  Previous  Next

ExpandType is the name of ChartNet's proprietary speed-typing feature.  ExpandType allows you to create short abbreviations for frequently used words, phrases, sentences, or even whole paragraphs that will be automatically inserted into the report after you enter the abbreviation followed by a space character.  For example, you might have an abbreviation of "abd" that expands to "abdomen".  This topic explains how to use ExpandType.  For more information on how to enter abbreviations into you ExpandType file, see the topic "ExpandType Maintenance".

Note- The following directions on using ExpandType assume you are currently on the Word Processing screen.

1.To use an ExpandType abbreviation, type the abbreviation followed by the space character (e.g. blank).  If the abbreviation is found in your ExpandType file, the abbreviation will be replaced with the text associated with the abbreviation.

2.To capitalize the first letter of the expanded text, capitalize the first letter of the abbreviation.  For example, if you have an abbreviation of "abd" for "abdomen", then typing "Abd" causes "Abdomen" to be inserted.

3.  To capitalize all of the expanded text, capitalize all the letters of the abbreviation.  For example, if you have an abbreviation of "abd" for "abdomen", then typing "ABD" causes "ABDOMEN" to be inserted.

4.To invoke the ExpandType Maintenance screen (Figure 18-1)  that allows you to add, edit, and delete abbreviations, press the CTRL key twice in rapid succession.

5.To avoid having an abbreviation expanded into its full text, press the ALT key twice in rapid succession before pressing the space bar.

6.  To quickly add a new abbreviation (without using the ExpandType Maintenance screen), first select (i.e. highlight) from your report the word or words to be inserted into the ExpandType file, then press F7.  Enter the abbreviation that you wish to assign to the selected text, then press Enter.

7.  Users may NOT use dashes ("-") or slashes ("/") as these are reserved characters.  If these characters exist in your expanded word, ExpandType will be unable to recognize the corrected word.
