Header/Footer Options

Introduction

This topic describes the options available for controlling the formatting of reports that have headers and footers.  In ChartNet, the transcriptionists only type the "body" of the report.  At distribution time, ChartNet assembles the report by bringing in the report's body and the headers and footers from the Forms file.  All options as to where the headers and footers print as well as when they print are controlled in the Forms table.  There are two basic techniques for handling headers and footers: "inside the margins" and "outside the margins".  The "Do not print headers/footers in margins" check box located on the "Formatting" page is used to control which technique is used.

"Inside the Margins"

When "inside the margins" is used (which is selected when "Do not print headers/footers in margins is unchecked), the headers and page footers are actually printed in the area defined by the top and bottom margins.  This means that if you have a header that is physically will take up 1.5 inches, then the "top" margin must be at least 1/4 inch larger than the header's height, or 1.75 inches. (The extra 1/4 inch is needed to allow for the non-printable area around the page that laser printers cannot print on).  This technique should be used if the same header needs to appear on every page.

"Outside the Margins"

When "outside the margins" is used (which is selected when "Do not print headers/footers in margins" is checked), the header is printed "below" the top margin and the page footer is printed "above" the bottom margin.  This technique should be used if the header for the first page is different than the header that will go on all other pages.

Scenario 1:   No headers on any page

On the "Formatting" page, set the "Top" margin to the actual top margin desired.

On the "Header" page, make sure it has no lines

Scenario 2:  Same header on every page

On the "Header" page, define the header that will appear on every page

On the "Formatting" page, make sure "Do not print headers/footers in margins" is NOT checked

On the "Formatting" page, set the "Top" margin to a value large enough to hold the header (plus 1/4 inch)

Scenario 3:  Header on first page and no header on rest of pages

On the "Formatting" page, check "Do not print headers/footers in margins"

On the "Formatting" page, set "Top" margin to the actual top margin desired.

On the "Header" page, make sure it has no lines
On the "Body" page, define the header at the top of the body format
